Since last year, all wines elaborated by Santa Rita are vegan-friendly. Here is our top vegan apt selection of wines.
Santiago, June 2019. Undoubtedly, veganism is breaking into the world; in the United States, there has been an increase of 600% of people who identify as vegans over the last three years. In the United Kingdom something similar happens, this number has increased by 350% compared to a decade ago.
Chile is not far behind, according to the latest National Environmental Survey; 1.5 million Chileans do not consume meat in their daily diet, while 75% of the population would be willing to reduce their intake to avoid the environmental consequences of the production of meat.
2019 will be the year of veganism, as stated by The Economist, and this is mainly explained by how millennials, the largest generation in the world, has adopted this lifestyle, of which an estimated 12% avoid foods or drinks derived from animal origin. Therefore, the supply of products and services for this part of the population has increased considerably and the wine sector is not far behind.
If wine is made of grapes, what animal ingredient does this product have? In the process of vinification and winemaking, some wineries use clarifiers of animal origin. These derive mainly from proteins, such as egg albumin or milk casein, among others, which help to remove natural impurities from the wine, helping the brilliance of these. In the case of vegan wines, the clarification process does not use products of animal origin, but inert products, of vegetable or clay finish, with which they achieve the same final effect.
This trend increasingly adopts more followers, with Santa Rita also leading the way. As of last year, all its wines are suitable for people who do not consume products of animal origin. “Veganism is gaining more and more followers, both in the whole world and in our country. This trend will undoubtedly expand with increasing force and we are becoming a real alternative for those consumers who, in addition to being vegan, demand top quality products”, says Eduardo Alemparte, Winegrowing Director of Santa Rita Estates.

Medalla Real Gran Reserva Chardonnay 2018: Bright, greenish-yellow in color. Intense and complex bouquet that combines mineral notes with light citrus, nectarines and flowers. The palate stands out for its refreshing acidity that balances nicely with the wine’s fruitiness, good weight, silky texture, and depth.
Secret Reserve Red Blend 2018: A wine with violet color. The predominating aromas of red fruits such as plums, cherries, and raspberries and notes of vanilla. The lush palate is fresh and juicy with good depth and so, ripe tannins.
120 Reserva Especial Cabernet Sauvignon 2018: deep and intense violet-red in color. Notes of red and black fruits predominate on the nose with the touch of spice that is typical in Cabernet, plus the aromas of vanilla, cloves, and tobacco that come from the oak. Sweet, elegant, and smooth tannins lend depth to the well-rounded palate and lead to a fresh, fruity, and juicy finish.
